Biography of Robert Morrow Mengel (1921-1990)
Born and raised in Kentucky, Robert Mengel pursued an interest in the study and drawing and painting of natural history subjects from an early age. He completed master’s and doctoral degrees in zoology at the University of Michigan, following military service during World War II. In 1953, while still working on his book, Birds of Kentucky, Mengel took a half-time position at the University of Kansas. There he began work on a catalog of the ornithological books in the Ralph Nicholson Ellis, Jr. collection, now housed at KU's Kenneth Spencer Research Library. Mengel later became a professor of zoology at the University of Kansas and a curator in the university’s Museum of Natural History.
