Biography of Karen Severud (Pearson) Cook

Karen Severud (Pearson) Cook grew up in Cooperstown, New York and graduated cum laude from Barnard College in New York City. She earned her masters (1972) and doctorate (1978) in Geography from the University of Wisconsin at Madison.

She was a professional cartographer for years in Wisconsin, Georgia, Maryland, and Alaska before intensifying her research into the history of map-making and getting a degree in library science in 2001. Cook was thereafter a Special Collections Librarian at the Kenneth Spencer Research Library at the University of Kansas in Lawrence where she curated rare books and manuscripts from 2001 until her retirement in December 2020.

Cook researched the evolution of map production, design and use; biographical details of explorers and cartographers; and the general public’s concept of the map.
