Thomas "Tom" Michael Skrtic was born in McKeesport, Pennsylvania on August 1, 1946, to Paul and Caroline Skrtic. He obtained his Bachelor of Science in Special Education from the California University of Pennsylvania in California, Pennsylvania in 1969. Scope and Contents

This collection has been intellectually organized into several series, reflecting the work that Tom Skrtic accomplished at the University of Kansas and elsewhere. Folders remain physically as found when processing the collection, so series do not appear consecutively across boxes. These series include Annotated articles and materials; Notes; Articles and writings; Course planning; Professional papers; Personal papers; KU related papers; Conferences and presentations; Organization materials; Overheads; Audiovisual materials; and Born digital materials.

The Annotated articles and materials contain articles and books heavily annotated by Skrtic, and the Notes series covers materials either marked as notes or were created as notes for research or presentation purposes. Articles and writings included articles authored or co-authored by Skrtic and drafts or writings created by Skrtic.

The Course planning series contains materials related to various classes Skrtic taught or was part of, and the Professional papers series covers writings and materials that pertain to Skrtic’s professional life in a more general manner. The Personal papers series contains materials related to Skrtic’s personal life, including correspondence and planners.

KU-related papers include awards, KU-related correspondence, and materials related to colleagues. Conference and presentations materials include presentations, conference materials, and travel materials, and the Organization materials cover materials relating to various organizations with which Skrtic had working relationships.

Overheads includes transparencies Skrtic created. Audiovisual materials and Born digital materials series concern those materials which have been physically separated from the rest of the collection due to their special needs.

Terms and language used in the collection are representative of when the texts were created and have been replicated in this finding aid only when directly quoting from original captions and folder titles. Folder titles containing information in [brackets] contain additional information provided by Spencer staff beyond the folder titles provided by Skrtic. Skrtic frequently used acronyms and otherwise shortened terms in folder titles that he used on a regular basis in his career, such as "SPED" for "Special Education" or "RASE" for "Remedial and Special Education," and these acronyms appear throughout this finding aid. Additionally, Skrtic often used "Thomas" when publishing and "Tom" when working with his colleagues or students, so his name appears interchangeably throughout this finding aid and the collection.
