Personal papers of Tom Hedrick
Overview
Tom Hedrick attended the University of Kansas as a student in the late 1950s before joining the University’s staff in 1961 as a sportscaster and eventually as a faculty member. This collection contains materials relating to Hedrick’s professional work outside KU with Baker University and professional sports leagues, as well as his personal life, including correspondence, news clippings, personal and professional photographs, and notes relating to Hedrick’s work.

Biography of Thomas A. Hedrick (1934 - )
Tom Hedrick was born May 5, 1934, in Boston, Massachusetts. He earned his Bachelor of Arts degree in Speech and Drama from Baker University in Baldwin City, Kansas, in 1956 and his Master of Arts degree in Radio and Television from the University of Kansas (KU) in Lawrence in 1958. Hedrick served in the Army Reserve from 1958 – 1963. He married Mary Lee Hough in 1999.
Hedrick became a sportscaster and instructor, calling professional sports matches for the Kansas City Chiefs (1964–1971), Nebraska Cornhuskers (1967-1970), Cincinnati Reds (1971-1972), Texas Rangers, and the Dallas Cowboys. He also called KU sports matches for 30 seasons and for the Baker University Wildcats. Hedrick won the Kansas Sportscaster of the Year award six times, in 1960, 1961, and 1963-1966.
In 1967, Hedrick was tapped by CBS Radio to do color commentary for the inaugural Super Bowl between the Kansas City Chiefs and the Green Bay Packers. He also provided commentary for the 1968 and 1970 Super Bowls.
Tom Hedrick called his final game for Baker University on February 28, 2019. He has since retired from sportscasting.

This collection contains papers primarily relating to Tom Hedrick’s time as a professional sportscaster. It includes sports rosters; correspondence; photographs; media guides; and personal materials. Hedrick also worked with KU and Baker University’s sports teams as a sportscaster extensively; materials relating to both universities can be found throughout the professional papers series.
