Overview

The Creed Shepard collection consists of papers and fliers from grassroots organizations in the Lawrence, Kansas area concerned with anarchy and cooperative, sustainable living, as well as universal health care, anti-globalization, and the anti-war movement. Papers from national conferences that Shepard attended about organizing, sustainability, and independent media are also included, along with materials from national organizations. There are also examples of independent media including zines, newsletters, and newspapers from around the United States.

Biography of Creed Shepard

Creed Joshua Shepard is a poet and activist based in the Lawrence, Kansas area. He was associated with the Ad Astra Institute of Kansas, a progressive, research-based think tank founded in 2005 that studied single payer health care. Other topics of interest for Shepard include labor organizing, anarchy, independent media, anti-globalization, the anti-war movement, and sustainability.

The Creed Shepard collection has been organized into three separate but related series: political papers, conferences and trainings, and independent media. Items are arranged chronologically within each series.

The political papers series includes fliers, printed materials, and sometimes notes from local and national grassroots organizations, including anarchist and communal cooperative living groups, as well as the progressive think tank Ad Astra Institute and their study of single payer health care.

The second series is comprised of papers and manuals Shepard received at conferences and trainings he attended, along with a few notes. Topics include anarchist tradition, organizing grassroots campaigns, and media reform.

The last series contains singular or isolated issues from Shepard’s collection of independent media from local and national sources.
