History of the Science Fiction Research Association

The Science Fiction Research Association, or SFRA, was founded in 1970 and is the oldest professional and international organization focusing on the study of science fiction literature. SFRA has published their journal of literary criticism, the SFRA Review, which was originally named the SFRA Newsletter, since 1971. The organization remains active in the 21st century and holds an annual conference each year.

Scope and Contents

Spencer Library staff have intellectually organized this collection into 10 different series, though materials physically remain in the order found when processing. The series include Committee Materials, Correspondence, Materials from SFRA members, Conference materials, Newsletters and magazines, Award information, Directory and membership information, Papers, Finances, and Oversize materials. Because these records were donated by several different members of the organization, there may be overlap, and materials related to a particular topic or activity may appear across several different series. At the same time, there may be some materials related to other academic responsibilities of individual donors at their universities. Boxes 17 - 19 and 24 - 27 were donated by Donald Hassler and contain materials related both to his work with SFRA and his academic work.

The Committee materials series includes papers relating to various committees within SFRA and may include meeting minutes or committee-specific correspondence. These include both standing and ad hoc committees, notably the executive committee overseeing the organization. Correspondence includes incoming and outgoing letters, as well as enclosures related to the correspondence, often regarding business conducted by the association. The Materials from SFRA members series covers materials either sent specifically to or from various members of SFRA leadership. The Conference materials series contains materials relating to conference travel or conference planning.

The Newsletters and magazines series includes planning documentation for and newsletters created by SFRA, the SFRA Review, and newsletters and magazines created by organizations close to SFRA. The Award information series includes materials on the various awards that SFRA has nominated members for or conferred onto members. The Directory and membership information series relates to SFRA membership directories, membership correspondence, and voting ballots from 1970 through 2008.

The Papers series includes miscellaneous papers that SFRA accumulated from other related organizations, individual members, and non-committee related papers. The Finances series includes treasurer’s reports and organizational notes or correspondence relating to the organization's finances. Oversize materials, located at MS Qa52, have been physically separated from the rest of the collection in order to better preserve those items.

Processing Information

The first 14 boxes of this collection were originally inventoried and rehoused in 1992. While processing collection additions in 2023, the original 1992 processed materials were intellectually arranged and described in this finding aid. Audiovisual items originally located in Box 5 have been removed to be reprocessed according to current audiovisual preservation standards. The 2023 processing resulted in folder numbering changes after Box 16, adhering to current archival standards.

All folder titles were provided by donors unless [in brackets], in which case Spencer staff have added titles or clarification to existing titles.
