Overview

The collection contains documents, publications, and notes Victoria Shinn collected during her service in the National Association of Colored Women’s Clubs, the Kansas Association of Colored Women's Clubs (K.A.C.W.C.), and Church Women United. Collection also contains a few papers from the Topeka Council of Clubs and the Ne Plus Ultra Art and Literary Club. A 1952-1961 K.A.C.W.C. scrapbook belonging to Anna Boydston Woods and a 365 Days of Black History Calendar (1989) are also included.

Biography of Victoria Shinn (1915-2008)

Victoria Silverleane Jefferson Shinn was born in Beggs, Oklahoma. She moved to Topeka, Kansas in 1923 where she graduated from Washington Grade School, Lincoln Junior High, and Topeka High School. She married Charles Shinn, Jr. in 1934 with whom she had two sons, Owen Clark Shinn (1934-2017) and Daryle Shinn (1937-2014).

Shinn was a member of the Shiloh Baptist Church and served on the finance committee, as a condolence clerk, and as a member of the choir. Shinn was also a life member of the National Association of Colored Women’s Clubs, the Kansas Association of Colored Women's Clubs, Church Women United, and the Ne Plus Art and Literary Club where she served as president, secretary, historian, and parliamentarian over her 57-year membership. Victoria Shinn died in 2008.
