Scope and Contents

This collection contains carte de visite portraits of 46 Victorian artists, including painters, illustrators, and sculptors. 13 of the portraits are accompanied by cut signatures of the artist. Artists include George Cruikshank, William Holman Hunt, Thomas Landseer, Daniel Maclise, Dante Gabriel Rossetti, and Sir John Tenniel.

Of the photographers represented, Maull and Polyblank were active from 1854-1865; Cundall and Downes from 1859-1865; and Camille Silvy from 1859-1868. Oliver Sarony opened his studio in Scarborough in 1857 (’the largest in Europe’). Caldesi and Blanford were active from 1860-1862. Henry Hering and the Southwell Brothers both established their studios in 1860. C. T. Newcombe was at Regent Street from 1862-65; Window and Bridge were active from 1862-1866; and Elliott and Fry was founded in 1863.
