Nelson S. Shaler collection
Overview
The contract is handwritten and signed by members of the tribe, including Ke-a-quack, as well as Shaler and J. E. Badger, interpreter. The laminated newspaper clipping is from the Long Island Daily Press (undated but likely from the 1950s or early 1960s) and describes the contract. The letter is handwritten in the Kickapoo language and is addressed Kecon Wahthas-Kuk and signed Kecon Shan-nah. Shaler was a trader who drew up the contract with the Kickapoo to allow credit to the tribe without taking unfair advantage of them.
