William Christian Hoad was born January 11, 1874 in Lecompton, Kansas. He completed his bachelors in science at Lane University, also in Lecompton, in 1896 before graduating from the University of Kansas with a civil engineering degree in 1898.

Hoad spent some time working for the Atchison, Topeka, and Santa Fe Railroad, returning to KU in 1900 as an instructor.
