Biography of John L. Kilworth (1864-1948)
Kilworth was born in Lawrence, Kansas. He attended public schools and the Lawrence Business College. After graduation from the business college, Kilworth worked briefly as a clerk for Wells Fargo. In the early 1890s, he accepted a position as clerk and bookkeeper at the Watkins National Bank of Lawrence. In the decade that followed Kilworth augmented his inheritance left to him by his father, Issac, and by 1899 he retired from the bank to manage his extensive property holdings.

Scope and Contents
This collection of papers is primarily Kilworth's incoming business correspondence. There are also approximately 350 letters that treat personal or family matters, as well as notebooks and volumes from Kilworth's studies at the Lawrence Business College and miscellaneous personal papers related to Kilworth's real property holdings and recreational activities, such as attending plays. The bulk of the collection is arranged chronologically in 13 boxes, dating from 1880-1899, and totalling more than 2100 items. An addition that came in 1981 is in the last box of the collection; two volumes have been physically separated and are located at RH MS E69 and RH MS E70.
