The volume contains an article written by Frank A. Root recounting the early history of Atchison, Kansas. In it, Root recalls who some of the first businessmen were, talks about the gold rush, the first church and first school in Atchison, the completion of the telegraph line and other events of the day. The article first appeared on February 20, 1880, in the Atchison Daily Champion.
