Helen Foresman Spencer was the wife of Kansas City industrialist Kenneth Aldred Spencer. Following her husband's death in 1960, Mrs. Spencer became president and director of the charitable foundation which they established in 1949. Under her direction until its dissolution in 1979, the Kenneth A. and Helen F. Formally known as the Museum of Art, University of Kansas, the University's art collections had been stored and/or displayed in Spooner Hall, which had previously housed KU's library. The first item in the collection was a marble bust of Amos Adams Lawrence, donated by the subject in 1878.
