New York office, 1877 - 1895

 Sub-Series

Scope and Contents

Outgoing correspondence pertaining to the role of the New York office in the daily business of the J. B. Watkins Land Mortgage Company. The correspondence spans from November 27, 1877-February 6, 1895.

Most letters address investors, but others inform the Lawrence office and others about the status of the business assets. The correspondence ceased from the New York office when the J. B. Watkins Land Mortgage Company went into receivership for the first time in 1894 and the office closed.

After the New York office closed in April-May 1894, Watkins remained in New York selling railway bonds from his hotel room. He used the last of the New York office letterpress volumes to carry on his personal correspondence, July 25, 1894-September 27, 1894, pages 250-658. The volume was brought to Lawrence with Watkins' secretary, where it was used for Watkins' personal correspondence from October 26, 1894-February 6, 1895, pages 659-978. The volume is therefore crossreferenced with J. B. Watkins personal letterpress volumes for this period.

Volume numbers used in this finding aid refer to spine markings on each volume.
