Immediate Source of Acquisition

Found tipped into the front paste-down of John Wilkes, A complete collection of the genuine papers, letters, &c. in the case of John Wilkes. Berlin, 1769. Spencer Research Library (Special Collections) call number: B6923. Purchased from George Harding's Bookshop Ltd, London, England, 1973. Although purchased from an English bookseller, a recent pencil note in French, "maire de Londres et publiciste," on page 4 indicates a prior French provenance.

General

The assigned date is based on the fact that John Wilkes served as mayor of London in 1774. Sir Thomas Halifax, whose signature is also present, was active in city politics and was the mayor of London in 1776.
