General
The Smoky Hill Air National Guard Range (SHANGR) is on land in Saline County, Kansas initially taken over by the military in 1942 for a training encampment, Camp Phillips, and air base. The grounds chosen had prior to World War II only been lightly cultivated by Euro-American settlers. When World War II was over, the camp was renamed as the Smoky Hill Air National Guard Weapons Range.
