University of San Carlos and the Protomedicato of Guatemala, 1627-1840, 1887-1899
Scope and Contents
The University of San Carlos and the Protomedicato of Guatemala series includes various scholarly materials, including degree awards, final exams, financial information for the University, rector’s records, degree awards, and materials from the Saint Thomas Aquinas school that predated the University of San Carlos. This series, which is the bulk of the collection, contains some of the oldest and most fragile documents in the collection.
Records are mostly organized chronologically. At times the handwriting and spelling are difficult to read, so Spencer staff have used [brackets] in folder titles to indicate uncertainty when needed. "Quotations" have been used in this series for items that had formal titles on cover pages or are quoting from information provided by Griffith at time of donation.

History of the University of San Carlos
The University of San Carlos in Guatemala first began in 1563 as the Saint Thomas School (Colegio Mayor de Santo Tomás). St. Thomas was recognized for its work in scholastic philosophy and was renamed the Saint Thomas Aquinas School (Colegio de Santo Tomás de Aquino) by the Domincian monks in Guatemala.
Toward the end of the 17th century, the Saint Thomas Aquinas School became the University of San Carlos, specializing in several areas of study: theology, philosophy, moral theology, law, medicine, and Indigenous languages. The University of San Carlos is the oldest and largest operating University in Guatemala today.
