Scope and Contents

Grant in frankalmoigne by Hubert de Burgh, justiciar of England, presumably as Lord of the Three Castles of Gwent

"To the monks of Abbey Dore, Herefordshire Of the land of Lincott [Lyncoyt; IIancoed?] on the stream Troyn And pasture in the land of Grosmont sufficient to sustain that grange...and building material for the Grange of Lincoyt. from the forest of Grosmont.

For sustaining four priest monks who will sing masses for the souls of Kings Henry II, Richard, John, their brother Henry, and De Burgh.

Incipit: Omnibus sancte matris ecclesie filiis ad quos present As carta pervenerit Hubertus..."

Dates: After 1227, because mentions lands of William de Braos probably the William who succeeded to father Reginald's lands in 1227 and was hanged in 1230. Lands held in trust till circa 1245. Before death of Burgh in 1243; probably before first fall in 1233; perhaps before William's death. Hand consonant with 13th century If Monasticon infra correct., before 1232.

Place names: tentative identification; Troyn brook: might be Troy TrothyTroddi

Lincoyt: perhaps from Llan coed: religious place in the forest. cf. Llangattock-lingoed 1 mile west of the Trothy.

Partially recited in Confirmation of 16 Henry 111 (1232) quoted in Dugdalets Monasticon, 1825, v.5 pp 552 557.

Physical details: seal tag but seal itself is missing; some endorsements; in good condition but water-stained.
