Greensboro court records, 1984 - 1985

 Series

Scope and Contents

This series consists of trial documents related to a conflict in November 1979 in Greensboro, North Carolina, in which members of the Communist Workers' Party (CWP) led a "Death to the Klan" demonstration against the Ku Klux Klan in an African American neighborhood. Members of the KKK and the American Nazi Party engaged in a shooting match with the demonstrators; five people affiliated with the CWP died in the incident. Three trials were held in relation to the incident; the 1980 state and 1984 federal trial juries found all defendants not guilty, but a 1985 civil trial found some of those named in the suit guilty. Harold Covington was named in the civil suit but not among those convicted. Records in this series include motions, answers and responses, transcripts, memoranda, correspondence, notices, orders, briefs, and other related documentation of the civil suit.
