General

On the recto are a partial [?] letter from David Livingstone in Kuruman, South Africa, dated February 8, 1842; a note from Jas. Wolff; letter from Sir John Leslie; and William Henry Smith, Jr.'s autograph. Livingstone (1813-1873), an explorer and missionary, sends his kind regards and asks that "this journal" (not included) be accepted in place of a letter. Pencilled marginalia on the leaf suggests this is a forgery. Wolff lists who is preaching in the fore- and afternoon and asks the recipient whether he will preach or lecture the following Sunday. Sir John Leslie (1766-1832), a mathematician and philosopher, makes an appointment to meet with "dear Madam" and notes that Mr. John doesn't seem to know much about her ideas. Smith, Jr. (1825-1891) was a newsagent, bookseller, and statesman.

The verso includes autographs from [James St Clair Erskine (1762-1837), second earl of] Rosslyn, an army officer and politician, dated December 22, 1813 (recipients are W. Curry, Esq. and Thornton Chester; a stamp impression is also visible on the slip of paper); [Archibald Acheson (1776-1849), second earl of] Gosford and governor-in-chief of British North America, dated December 17, 1830 (recipient is Mrs. Cleaver (Anne Cleaver, wife of William Cleaver (1742-1815, bishop of Chester 1788-1800); the places London and Little Missenden and a stamp impression are also visible on the slip of paper); [Richard William Penn Curzon-]Howe (1796-1870), first Earl Howe, dated September 3, 1803 (recipient is again Mrs. Cleaver; the places Leicester and Little Missenden, Ambersham [Buckinghampshire, England) are also written on the slip of paper); [William Pleydell Bouverie (1779-1869), third earl of] Radnor and a politician, dated 1807 (Recipient is The Rev. J. Cleever, and the place Great Coxwell, Farringdon is also written on the slip of paper); [Joseph] H[ilaire Pierre] Belloc (1870-1953), poet and author, dated 1937; and [George Child-Villiers, 5th earl of] Jersey (1773-1859), conservative member of the House of Lords, dated December 13, 1814 (recipients are W. Currie, Esq. and Thornton Chester. The place Orford is also written on the slip of paper).
