Scope and Contents

"The Proceedings in The Star-chamber: against Henry Sherfeild Esq': for breaking one of the windowes in the Church of St: Edmonds in the Cittie of Salisbury. Sexto die Februarij Anno Octauo Caroli Regis Termino Sancti Hillarij. Ano: Dni: 1632. R: G."

Sherfield, a respectable vestry-member of St Edmund's, was distressed by the veneration shown a window displaying the Creation, but the bishop of Salisbury (John Davenant, 1576-1641) would not give the vestry leave to replace the window; therefore Sherfield broke it. The case turns partly on iconoclasm and partly on episcopal authority. Depositions, arguments, and opinions, are verbatim.

This manuscript is a slight variant of the text in "A complete collection of state-trials and proceedings…4th ed…preface by Francis Hargrave…", London, 1776, volume 1. columns 399-418; apparently a reprint of the 3rd, 1742, edition.
