Copy of a bill in Star Chamber against Cotton, Selden, Barrell, and the earls of Bedford, Somerset, and Clare, for circulating the seditious MS tract "A proposition for His Majesty's service to bridle the impertinence of Parliament", November 1629 or later

 File — Box: 1, Folder: 3

Scope and Contents

"The Judges Petition agt Francis Earle of Bedford & others about Sr Rob: Dudleys booke." Legal document: file fastened at head. Recites entire text of tract; advises that the author should be discovered since his intent was to inflame the public by pretending that the King had these tyrannous objectives; requests a subpoena to summon Cotton, et. al., before the Star Chamber since they "published" the tract without consulting the King or any magistrate.

Signatories: Heath, Sir Robert, 1575-1649. (King's Attorney-general); Crew, Sir Thomas, 1656-1634. (King's serjeant); "Rich: Shilton" (probably Shelton, Sir Richard, died 1647, Solicitor-general) Davenport, Sir HumphreY, 1566-1645. (King's serjeant); "Robt Bertley" (probably Berkeley, Sir Robert, 1584-1656, King's serjeant); Finch, Sir Heneage, died 1631. (Serjeant-at-law).

Note on the next tract: Some changes in wording from the Rushworth 1721 version.

Note on text of bill: Not given in Rushworth; but one of the defendants in R. is St John instead of Giles Barrell, gent., as here.
