Scope and Contents

Volume provides an account of travels throughout portions of Italy in both 1827 and 1829. Pages 1-23 describe the journey from Dover to Calais to St. Omer, Douay, St. Quentin, Laon, Rheims, Troyes, Chatillon, Dijon, Macon, Lyon, Natua, Porte du Rhone, Geneva, St. Michel, Lanslebourg, and Mont Denis from February 7 through March 1, 1827. Pages 24-75 describe travels in Piedmont, Turin, Alessandria, Genoa, Chiavasi, Lucca, Pisa, and Florence from March 1-18, and pages 76-87 describe the author's travels in Siena, Radicofani, Viterbo, and Rome from March 18-23. The author was in Rome for several months in 1827 (March 23-July 2) and describes what he saw on pages 88-189. He describes Holy Week activities in Rome on page 147. The author then traveled between Civita Casellana, Terni, Spoleto, Foligno, Loretto, Ancona, Rimini, Cesano, Bologna, Ferrara, Venica, Padua, Vincenza, Verona, Lake of Gardda, Brescia, and Milan in July, leaving Milan to go to Geneva on July 25. These travels were described on pages 189-247.

Page 248 starts with "Extracts from my journal of 1829, Pompeii," and pages 248-265 include descriptions of Salerno, Paestum, Naples, Sorrento, Herculaneum, Vesuvius, Ischia, and Baiae dating from Otober 18-27, 1829. Pages 266-285 are an appendix containing "a few of the principal pictures in the palaces galleries churches &c mentioned in the journal."

In 1827 the author traveled with his father and "Henry," meeting up with the Fitzherberts. In 1829 he traveled with a Hepburn.
