Scope and Contents

The author began this volume stating that he, Mr. Franz, and Mr. Degener set sail on the Speranza from Naples to Messina. Pages 8-50 describe a stay in Sicily dating from September 18-October 15, 1829, indicating on page 50 that the group reached Naples at "one at night" in October.

Page 51 continues with a description of a "Tour in Spain 1832." Page 52 describes landing at Gibralter after 8 days on the voyage from Falmouth, and pages 52-88 describe travels between Gibralter, Cadiz, Xerez, Seville, Cordova, Alcala la Real, and Granada on July 23-August 25, 1832. Pages 89-129 describe travels between Guadia, Velez, Murcia, Elche, Alicante, Villena, San Felipe, Valencia, Barcelona, Monserrat, Lerida, Saragossa, Ariza, Guadalajara, Madrid and environs, Burgos, Vittoria, and Bayonne from August 26-October 19, 1829.

Page 131 starts "Tour in Greece Asia Minor and Turkey 1834." Page 132 notes that the author left Naples with Tighe on July 13, and pages 132-153 describe travels between Naples, Bari, Tarento, Otranto, Corfu, Sana Maura, Cephalonia, Zante, Patras, Vostizza, Megaspelion, a convent, Delphi, and Corinth from July 13-August 4, 1834. Pages 153-174 describe traveling in Sicyon, Megara, Athens, Marathon, Cape Colonna, Egeria, Epidaurus, Nauplioa, Mycenea, Argos, Hydra, and Syra from August 4-25, and pages 175-197 describe Syra, Scio, Smyrna, Ephesus, Laodicea, Hierapolis, Philadelphia, Sardis, Thyatria, and Pergamo from August 25-October 1. Pages 197-217 describe Saimsaki, Adramiti, the Troad, the Dardenelles, Gallipoli, and Constantinople in October, and pages 218-228 describe traveling from Constantinople to Adrianople, Sofia, Nisch, Hassan Palanka, Belgrade, and Sembria from October 25-November 7, 1834. The author notes at the end of this description that he and his fellow travelers went from Sembir up the Danube to Pest in six days by steam and then to Vienna by diligence.

Page 228 also has a newspaper clipping, dating from circa 1874, quoting an account from pages 225-226 of an impalement in Servia. The clipping states "Mr. W.T. Blair (Twickenhampark), writes to us: 'A friend of mine who traveled in Turkey...updwards of 40 years ago has...sent me the following extracts from his journal...the gentleman...is now living in London..."

The diary author described the effects of plague on Constantinople on page 206, the Sultan Mahomet and the Pasha on page 210, and towers faced with the skulls of Servia rebels on page 224. The author was received by upper class society on his travels and frequently dined with the British consul or attended other diplomatic dinners.
