General
Paul Ehrlich studied ecology and evolution, was a Bing Professor of Population Studies and Professor of Biological Science at Stanford University, and appeared many times on the Johnny Carson Show. He published The Population Bomb and wrote Extinction: the Causes and Consequences of the Disappearance of Species with his wife Anne Ehrlich, who worked with Friends of the Earth. Paul and Anne Erlich met at the University of Kansas where they both studied biology. [This biographical information is from the included Spring 1982 article in the Kansas Alumni Magazine.]
In addition to the article, the file includes a 2009 schedule for a visit to Lawrence from the Ehrlichs, presumably written by Katie Armitage, along with correspondence detailing her planning of numerous lectures that Ehrlich gave at KU; a 1995 New York Times clipping announcing Ehrlich as a recipient of the first annual Heinz Award; “Deadly Links: the Connection between Weapons and the Environment,” a 1987 speech by Anne Ehrlich given to the Sierra Club Assembly; many articles published by Anne and Paul Ehrlich in The Mother Earth News on population, environmental issues, and nuclear winter; a flier for events surrounding “The Day After,” advertising a Paul Ehrlich’s participation in a forum at KU; fliers from 1981 lecture at KU on Extinction; numerous press releases from the Stanford University News Service; and a copy of the newspaper Zero Poulation Growth, a group co-founded by Ehrlich, including a review written by Katie Armitage of Paul Ehrlich and Shirly Feldman’s 1977 book Race Bomb (draft copies and outline of which are also included). The file also includes almost yearly Christmas cards from the Ehrlichs to the Armitages with letters detailing the year’s activities.
