Letters and photocopies concerning the arrest of Colonel Anthony for “jayhawking”, 1890, 1951

 File — Box: 5, Folder: 4

Scope and Contents

Includes a hand written copy of Captain John Brown Jr.'s 1862 letter and an 1951 letter from the Kansas Historical Society stating that they have a typed copy of the letter submitted to them by Daniel Read Anthony, Jr. in 1907.

The photocopies deal with an 1859 incident in Leavenworth, Kansas in which Daniel Read Anthony was charged by the United States for aiding an enslaved person, Peter Fisher, to escape the courthouse before being returned to servitude. Many abolitionist supporters of John Brown aided in blocking Fisher’s pursuers.

Also included is a history of Toussaint L. Overture, the formerly enslaved liberator of Haiti, written by Anthony, in which he compares Overture to George Washington.
