Scope and Contents Includes a hand written copy of Captain John Brown Jr.'s 1862 letter and an 1951 letter from the Kansas Historical Society stating that they have a typed copy of the letter submitted to them by Daniel Read Anthony, Jr. in 1907. The photocopies deal with an 1859 incident in Leavenworth, Kansas in which Daniel Read Anthony was charged by the United States for aiding an enslaved person, Peter Fisher, to escape the courthouse before being returned to servitude. Scope and Contents

Includes a letter written by Captain John Brown, Jr. bemoaning the arrest of Colonel Daniel Read Anthony for “jayhawking,” or preventing the recapture of formerly enslaved people in the Kansas 7th Regiment camp by denying entry to slave hunters attempting to return people to forced labor. A letter from Anthony to his sister is also included, telling of his release and his popularity among the troops for his abolitionist stance.
