Partial letter contents as provided by bookseller: “Tell me too of any other books, new or old, which are desirable – can you get Carlyle’s Wilhelm Meister… Shall we to advantage buy Guizot’s History of Civilization? … Have you heard anything of my medical books? & how comes your Tennyson … Have you heard of any trouble [about] Putnam of Roxbury [George Putnam, 1807-1878] – I have heard of a rumor of dissatisfaction & should not be surprised if it were to exist, for he is too much enlightened for most of the world …”
