Personal Papers of Emily Taylor
Overview
Emily Taylor was the University of Kansas' Dean of Women from 1956-1974 and was Director of the Office of Women in Higher Education at the American Council of Education in Washington, D.C. from 1975-1982. This collection contains awards, plaques, certificates, photographic materials, publications, personal papers, and clippings related to Taylor's career at KU and with the American Council of Education.

Biography of Emily Taylor (1915-2004)
Emily Taylor received her bachelor's and master's degrees from the Ohio State University and her doctorate from the University of Indiana. Before coming to the University of Kansas she worked as an English teacher, counselor, and advisor.
In 1956 Taylor joined KU as Dean of Women. While at KU, Taylor established the first university commission on the status of women, hosted a radio show called "The Feminist Perspective," and was instrumental in creating Nunemaker Center for honors students and Hashinger Hall for fine arts students. She also helped create the Women's Resource and Career Planning Center, which was renamed in her honor in 1974. She was inducted into the KU Women's Hall of Fame in 1971.
In 1974, Emily Taylor resigned from KU and took the position of Director of the Office of Women in Higher Education of the American Council on Education in Washington, D.C. She retired from that directorship at the end of 1981 and died in 2004.
