History of the Old and New Club (Lawrence, Kan.)
The Old and New Club of Lawrence, Kansas was founded in 1874 as a men's literary club. Its formation was prompted by University of Kansas Professor Byron C. Smith and Lawrence newspaperman T. Dwight Thacher. The club's first members agreed to meet weekly at homes of the members for the purpose of hearing speakers and holding discussions. The members elected no officers, instead enlisting the host of each meeting to serve as chair.

Scope and Contents
These records of the Old and New Club of Lawrence, Kansas contain a brief history of the Club, its meeting programs from 1874 to 2022, club correspondence and photographs, and clippings. Most of RH MS 1246 contains notes and papers of Arly Allen as well as other members of the Club which they would share at their meetings. Arly Allen was formerly the president of Allen Press in Lawrence, Kansas which is currently run by his son Rand Allen. At RH MS D130 is a journal of minutes of club meetings held 1898 to 1903.
