Biography of Esther Buhler Paxton, 1906-1990

Esther Buhler Paxton was born July 25, 1906 at Pretty Prairie (Reno County), Kansas to David B. and Helen (Hansman) Buhler. Following the death of her parents, she became the guardian of five of her siblings. In 1928, she received a bachelor's degree in piano from the University of Kansas at Lawrence, where she was a member of the Delta Gamma social sorority. She married Edwin M. Paxton on June 22, 1935. They moved to Lawrence in 1936, where Mrs. Paxton taught piano. She was a member of Lawrence's Trinity Episcopal Church, the Lawrence Music Club, the National Guild of Piano Teachers, Mu Phi Epsilon International Music Fraternity, and Adah Chapter No. 7 of the Order of the Eastern Star, in which she was a 50-year member at the time of her death. Mrs. Paxton died on March 10, 1990 at Lawrence. Burial was in the Lone Star Cemetery at Pretty Prairie, Kansas.

The papers of Esther Buhler Paxton, a graduate of the University of Kansas and long-time Lawrence, Kansas resident and piano teacher, consist chiefly of her membership records from organizations with which she was affiliated. Her membership records include those of the National Federation of Music Clubs, the Kansas Federation of Music Clubs, the National Guild of Piano Teachers, Mu Phi Epsilon International Music Fraternity, Adah Chapter No. 7 of the Order of the Eastern Star, Lawrence's Trinity Episcopal Church, Delta Gamma social sorority's Lawrence alumnae organization, and the Lawrence Music Club.

The papers date from 1939 to 1990. They also include programs of recitals by Esther Paxton's piano students, a book of guest signatures which include University of Kansas alumni [from the class of 1928?] dating from August 1939 to December 1944, and a birthday card from her mother. At RH MS-P 863 is an unidentified group photograph.
