Overview
The papers of Parsons, Kansas natives Lee Clifford Smith and his wife Carrie (Lakin) Smith, are comprised chiefly of their student records from Parsons in the 1920s and 1930s, and later from the Kansas State Teachers College of Pittsburg, and the University of New Mexico at Albuquerque. The collection's photographs, which are chiefly of Lee Clifford Smith, depict his years as a student athlete and his later coaching career in basketball and football.

Biography of Lee Clifford and Carrie (Lakin) Smith
Levi (Lee) Clifford Smith was born February 14, 1909 at Parsons, Kansas to Owen C. and Hattie (Bishop) Smith. The Smiths lived in Burlington, Kansas for a time, where Clifford attended schools and participated in athletics. He graduated from Parsons High School in 1928, earned a bachelor of science degree from the Kansas State Teachers College of Pittsburg in 1939, and a master of arts degree from the University of New Mexico at Albuquerque in 1955. After succeeding as a student athlete in basketball and football, Smith later coached basketball and football professionally. He died on February 23, 1997, at Anchorage, Alaska.
Smith's wife Carrie was born February 2, 1922 to John A. and Mary Lakin of Parsons, Kansas. She graduated high school at Parsons in 1939, earned an associate in arts degree from Parsons Junior College in 1941, a bachelor of science degree from the Kansas State Teachers College of Pittsburg in 1949, and a master of arts degree from the University of New Mexico at Albuquerque in 1954. She died at Grants, New Mexico on January 26, 1990.
