History of the Brittendall Family

One of ten children, Clarence Brittendall was born on August 23, 1872 to parents John Luther Brittendall and Mary Mallory Brittendall near Palmyra, Marion County, Missouri. In 1879, the family established a homestead in Ellsworth County, Kansas, near the town of Brookville. Clarence and his brother, Will, took part in the Cherokee Strip land run in September 1893 where they established homestead claims near Okeene and Homestead, Oklahoma. That winter, Clarence and Rilla Stone began their courtship in Ellsworth County, Kansas. When Clarence left to make improvements to his homestead claim in February 1894, he and Rilla exchanged letters until he returned and they were married in November 1894.

Rilla Stone, one of five children born to Francis M. Stone and Nancy Jane Farrington Stone, was born in Lecompton, Douglas County, Kansas, on August 20, 1876. The family came from Illinois and later moved to Lincoln County, Kansas, eventually settling in the area of Brookville, Kansas. Rilla died in 1954.

Rilla and Clarence Brittendall sold the homestead in the Oklahoma Territory soon after 1900. Their family of 7 children lived in Kansas, Colorado and Missouri and then settled in Salina, Saline County, Kansas.
