Brittendall family papers

Clarence Brittendall (b. 1872) wrote from Okeene, Oklahoma Territory to Rilla Stone (1876-1954), Brookville, Saline County, Kansas, as he made improvements on his homestead claim from the Cherokee Strip land run in September 1893. The two exchanged letters until their marriage in November 1894. This collection consists of their correspondence as well as family history notes by Caroline Dean and Bessie Dutton. Most of the letters are accompanied by photocopied transcripts.

Overview This photocopy is of a July 1, 1867 letter from merchant Thomas Dougherty Heed, written from Fort Harker, Kansas, a military post along the Santa Fe Trail in Ellsworth County. Heed, a native of Bucks County, Pennsylvania, addresses his 3-page letter to his sister, Susanna Mercy Heed of Bucks County, describing the traffic on the Santa Fe Trail, negative interactions with Native Americans, buffalo herds, and the local gambling and violence. Typescript of "Our Campbell Legacy," by Kathleen Boston Fox, together with family letters and personal accounts of Luther R. Johnson

The papers of Kathleen Boston Fox contain her 272-page typescript titled "Our Campbell Legacy" (a history of her Campbell and Johnson family ancestors), as well as letters and personal accounts of her great great uncle, Luther R. Johnson, which describe Campbell and Johnson family history in Missouri and in the early settlement of Ellsworth County, Kansas.
