Overview

Clarence Brittendall (b. 1872) wrote from Okeene, Oklahoma Territory to Rilla Stone (1876-1954), Brookville, Saline County, Kansas, as he made improvements on his homestead claim from the Cherokee Strip land run in September 1893. The two exchanged letters until their marriage in November 1894. This collection consists of their correspondence as well as family history notes by Caroline Dean and Bessie Dutton. Most of the letters are accompanied by photocopied transcripts.

Heed, a native of Bucks County, Pennsylvania, addresses his 3-page letter to his sister, Susanna Mercy Heed of Bucks County, describing the traffic on the Santa Fe Trail, negative interactions with Native Americans, buffalo herds, and the local gambling and violence.
