History of the Lawrence Council on Aging
The Lawrence Council on Aging was originally established in 1972 as the Douglas County Planning Council on Services for the Aging, Inc., which was changed to Council on Aging (COA) soon thereafter. The Council officially changed its name to Douglas County Senior Services, Inc. (DCSS) in 1988. Since 2017 the council has operated as the Douglas County Advocacy Council on Aging.
The council is a non-profit organization with goals to determine the needs of the elderly (over the age of 60) in Lawrence and surrounding communities and suggest plans and programs to meet those needs. Positions on the council are filled by appointment by the Lawrence City Commission and Board of County Commissioners and are filled for 3-years terms. The council has established the Douglas County Senior Resource Center (SRC), which runs and maintains all programs for seniors suggested by the council. Resources at the SRC, located in downtown Lawrence, KS, include information and advice on Medicare and other senior assistance government programs, clubs and activities, ride services, support groups, a game room, arts and continued education classes, and health presentations and screenings by LMH (Lawrence Memorial Hospital) Health.
