Administrative History of Volunteer Clearing House

The community office of the Volunteer Clearing House of Douglas County opened on January 20, 1973. It was sponsored by the Area Council of the Lawrence, Kansas Parent-Teacher Association through a grant from the Human Ecology Department of the KU Med Center with prime focus on health-delivering agencies. This quickly expanded to all community service agencies.

The purpose of the Volunteer Clearing House is the referral of potential volunteers according to their talents and desires to agencies or organizations, recruitment of volunteers far specific agency requests, promotion of the concept of volunteering, encouragement of adequate training and supervision by agencies and organizations using volunteers, and providing a coordinating function for community agencies.

Scope and Contents

These records span the years 1973-1976. Included are log book sheets which record all incoming calls and visitors; minutes of staff, advisory council, and board of directors meetings, and lists of members; incoming and copies of outgoing correspondence; news releases; monthly reports; publications, handouts, and newsletters; volunteer registration cards; financial records; and material dealing with the Breast Cancer Detection Project. The records are arranged chronologically within each folder, except the volunteer registration cards, which are arranged alphabetically.
