Overview
This collection contains copies of the books on sexual topics which were labeled obscene as well as lists of other Haldeman Julius publications. There is a file of letters from Laird Wilcox to Henry Haldeman concerning their activities on behalf of Henry Haldeman. The collection also contains a brief biography of Henry Haldeman. There is a copy of the appellant's brief and the brief prepared by the American Civil Liberties Union for Haldeman's appeal. The material contained in this collection does not shed too much light on Haldeman's conviction and appeal, but it does demonstrate the nature of the materials his firm published.

Biography of Haldeman, Henry J.
Henry J. Haldeman was the owner of the Haldeman Julius Press in Girard, Kansas. This firm published a series of books under the title, "Little Blue Books" which were of a controversial nature. Some of these books concerned sexual topics. Haldeman had inherited this publishing firm from his father, Emanuel Haldeman Julius in 1951. In 1961, Haldeman was arrested on obscenity charges stemming from the nature of the material contained in some of his publications. The case was appealed in 1963. At this time Mr. and Mrs. Laird M. Wilcox, publishers of the Kansas Free Press in Lawrence, Kansas, took an interest in the Haldeman case. Together with the American Civil Liberties Union and other interested parties, many publishers of similarly controversial books and magazines attempted to raise funds to finance Haldeman's appeal.
