Administrative History of The Kaw Valley Medical Society

The Kaw Valley Medical Society began with a meeting on March 23, 1967 held by six Kansas City, Kansas African-American physicians. Originally called the Interim Committee for Pan-Kansas Medical Society, the group hoped to create a local affiliate of the National Medical Association which could be used as a springboard for creation of a state level chapter. The name Kaw Valley Medical Society was chosen at the second meeting, April 27, 1967, and the boundaries of the organization were established as those of Wyandotte County. The Society has been active as a professional organization for African-American physicians, as a provider of health care to the poor and elderly, and as a sponsor of a health careers project which encourages disadvantaged youth to enter the medical profession.
