Overview

The Stanley Learned Collection includes twenty-six scrapbooks, dating from 1951 to 1968, of photographs, clippings, and other memorabilia which document Learned's leadership and service activities as an executive of the Phillips Petroleum Company of Bartlesville, Oklahoma. The collection also contains several works authored by Learned, including his student theses from the University of Kansas, certificates of honors awarded him by the University, and two souvenir medallions.

Biography of Stanley Learned

Samuel Stanley Learned, Jr. was born in Lawrence (Douglas County), Kansas on November 5, 1902 to Samuel Stanley and Alice (Preisach) Learned. He earned a bachelor's degree in civil engineering from the University of Kansas at Lawrence in 1924 and a master's degree in 1936.

In 1924, Learned joined the staff of Phillips Petroleum Company (Bartlesville, Oklahoma). He was appointed chairman of the company's corporate operating committee in 1944, and was named a vice president of the company in 1949. Learned became president of Phillips Petroleum Company in 1962 and its chief executive officer in 1964. He retired from the company in 1967, but remained on its board of directors until 1970. In his forty-three years with Phillips Petroleum Company, Learned was instrumental in its becoming one of the nation's leading international oil companies.

In 1971, Learned was awarded the Gas Processors Association's prestigious Hanlon Award. For his extraordinary service to the University of Kansas, he earned additional honors, including the University Alumni Association's 1959 Distinguished Service Citation, and its 1975 Fred Ellsworth Medallion for outstanding service. The University's School of Engineering awarded him its Distinguished Service Award in 1980, and in 1988 awarded him its first life membership in the School. Learned Hall, home of the School of Engineering, was named in his honor in 1966. Learned died October 21, 1995. He was preceded in death by his wife Mary and was survived by their daughter Ann and her children and grandchildren.

Scope and Contents

The Stanley Learned Collection includes twenty-six scrapbooks which document Learned's leadership of the Phillips Petroleum Company of Bartlesville, Oklahoma. The scrapbooks, which date from 1951 to 1968, consist largely of captioned photographs, clippings, travel itineraries, souvenir programs, annual reports of the Phillips Petroleum Company, certificates of appointments and awards, and congratulatory letters and telegrams regarding Learned's promotions to president and to chief executive officer of the company. Included are texts of speeches given by Learned and records of Learned's board memberships and service to the University of Kansas, the Bartlesville Chamber of Commerce, and the National Safety Council. Photographs and memorabilia from annual dinners of the Petroleum Industry's 25-Year Club are included, as are those from Learned's attendance at meetings of the Conquistadores del Cielo (Conquerors of the Sky), a national organization of aviation executives. The scrapbooks include many photographs of Learned's wife Mary Helms Learned. The scrapbooks are at RH MS R172, arranged chronologically in fourteen oversize boxes.

At RH MS 831 are three additional scrapbooks of Learned's career photographs; a personalized first-family photograph album from U.S. President Lyndon B. Johnson; several works authored by Learned (including his two University of Kansas theses); souvenir booklets from his membership in the Conquistadores del Cielo, two published articles by his brother, Edmund Philip Learned; certificates of honors awarded Stanley Learned by the University of Kansas; a souvenir medallion from a Phillips Petroleum Company-sponsored event in Rome with the Società Petrolifera Italiana; and a souvenir medallion from the University of Kansas centennial celebration.
