Biography of Clifford and Mary Margaret (Bouse) Shumaker.

Clifford Harold Shumaker was born October 25, 1907 at St. Joseph, Missouri. Mary Margaret (Bouse) Shumaker was born July 17, 1908 at Wetmore (Nemaha County), Kansas to Mary Caroline (Nichols) Bouse (1881-1931) and William George Bouse (1876-1941), who was a Nemaha County, Kansas physician. Clifford Shumaker and Mary Margaret Bouse graduated from Nemaha County's Goff High School. They received undergraduate degrees from the University of Kansas in 1930, and married on August 20 of that year. Their daughter Suzanne was born January 17, 1938. Mary Margaret Shumaker authored a published history of her mother's Little family ancestors titled Little Genealogy (Dallas, Tex, 1976).

The Clifford and Mary Margaret Shumaker Papers include their diplomas, pedigree charts, and a 1929/1930 KU license tag. The bulk of the collection consists of educational records, writings, land records, and memorabilia related to Mary Margaret Shumaker's Bouse, Clark, Nichols, and Little family ancestors, including her uncle Thornton Lynn Bouse, who was a University of Kansas graduate and Kansas educator. In the collection is a copied manuscript of a 1904 book by James A. Little, as well as a film copy of his book, located at RH MS 917.29.

At RH MS-P 917 are photographs from the 1900s of the Bouse, Nichols, Clark, and Little family members who resided in or near the Kansas communities of Centralia, Denison, Holton, and Almena. Blank picture postcards and postmarked postcards bearing only handwritten descriptions of their images are at RH MS-P 917. Other postmarked picture postcards are at RH MS 917. The collection's oversize items (diplomas and 19th century real estate papers) are at RH MS Q234.
