Personal Papers of George F. Jenks
Overview
George F. Jenks taught in the KU Geography Department from 1949-1986. This collection consists primarily of documents collected by Dr. Jenks as part of his research and cartographic activities. Many of the files relate to computer programs used for drafting maps that were being implemented during the 1970s and 1980s. There are also files relating to weather patterns, population statistics, and farm yields.

Biography of George Frederick Jenks
George F. Jenks was born in Oneonta, New York on July 9, 1916. He graduated from Strong Vincent High School in Erie, Pennsylvania about 1934. Jenks completed his Bachelor's Degree in Education at the State Teacher's College in Albany, New York in 1941. He subsequently earned Master and Doctoral Degrees in Geography from Syracuse University in 1947, and 1950 respectively.
During WWII, Jenks worked for the U.S. Army Air Force. During his graduate and doctoral programs he taught geography classes at South Kortright Central School, Syracuse University, Western Illinois University, and the University of Arkansas. He joined the faculty of the Geography Department at the University of Kansas in 1949.
Jenks focused on field methods and cartography, establishing himself as one of the nation's premier cartographers. He retired from the University of Kansas in 1986. Dr. Jenks passed away in December 1996 at the age of 80.
