Overview

Family correspondence and documentation represents about half of this collection of the Baur family papers. Most of the letters were written during the World War II years. The other half of the collection represents the community activities and interests of Edward Jackson Baur and his wife, Lillian Jacoby Baur. Mr. Baur, a University of Kansas Sociology Professor, was a member of the American Civil Liberties Union and Common Cause and addressed many concerns local to Lawrence, Kansas. Mrs. Baur served as a member of the League of Women Voters of Douglas County (KS), the NAACP, and various local clubs, as well as teaching in local schools. These papers include research and reports, minutes, notices, and newspaper clippings, etc., related to the various organizations.

Biography of Edward Jackson Baur

Edward Jackson Baur (1913 - 2001) received his degrees from the University of Chicago and served in World War II. As a sociology professor, he taught at the University of Kansas for 33 years. He contributed to a variety of KU committees, including a term as president of AAUP, and helped found a continuing series of scholarly publications. He was active in community groups such as the Democratic Socialists of America, the state units of the American Civil Liberties Union and Common Cause, and the Douglas County Senior Services.

Biography of Lillian Jacoby Baur

Lillian Jacoby Baur (1912 - 1991) received her degree from Nebraska Wesleyan University and became the head teacher at the Lawrence (KS) Community Nursery School. She was a member of the League of Women Voters of Douglas County, NAACP, and the Zodiac Club. Interested in women's issues, she volunteered at the Women's Transitional Care Services and served as president of the Achievement Place for Girls.
