History of the Quivira Club

The Quivira Club was a Lawrence, Kansas based women's literary organization. It was founded by Miss Sara Ann Richardson (1849-1921), a former local school teacher who had a passion for learning. Its first meeting was held on December 15, 1895 at Richardson's home on West Park Street.

The organization's objective, as stated in its constitution, was mutual improvement through study and fellowship. Membership was limited to 25 local ladies who shared the same values as its founder. Club members took turns as meeting hostess and organized refreshments and a program of readings to recite and discuss.

In the early days Shakespeare and the Bible were the major texts discussed, though no records exist from the early years of the Quivira Club. From the 1920s programs were filled with members' reports on various topics from political figures to the culture and landscapes of foreign countries, which were read at the meetings. The Quivira Club remained active in Lawrence into the 21st century.
