Custodial History

Robert Cole, who died around 1866 or 1867, appears to have acquired the collection in various small lots. Puttick and Simpson sold the collection in 1867, at which time Sir Thomas Phillipps bought a quantity of "autograph letters," which he numbered 19281-19287 and 23651-23788 in his catalogue. He had the latter group bound into 138 volumes called the Cole Autographs volumes. The 3 volumes that the Spencer Research Library bought were labeled with Phillips numbers 23659, 23662, and 23767 and with Cole Volume numbers 9, 12, and 117. Sotheby's sold the Phillipps manuscripts over a period of time.

Immediate Source of Acquisition

Acquired from Sotheby via Hofmann with funds gifted from Helen Foresman Spencer fund, 1977.

Processing Information

The collection had been bound by Phillipps into 3 volumes and was disbound by Spencer Research Library staff in 1987.
