Scope and Contents
The collection dates from 1975-2010 (dating references Armitage's research activities, not the original dates for documents and materials compiled within the collection) and are arranged in two series: Papers, 1975-2010; and Oversize Materials, 2002.
The first series contains such items as research notes; black and white and color photocopies (some with notations and other marginalia); color photographs; reprints and journal articles; newspaper and magazine clippings; correspondence and cards; article manuscripts and drafts; and fliers and pamphlets. Folders within the series are divided into two sub-series, subject files and individual/family files, then arranged alphabetically.
Oversize materials are located at RH MS R391 and consist of a poster for the Langston Hughes National Poetry Month.
Please note that Armitage often used inconsistent nomenclature when labeling her subject folders. While the physical folder titles reflect Armitage's original vocabulary choices, the finding aid and alphabetical ordering refect a consistent application of terms (i.e. "African American" in lieu of "black").
