Overview
This collection consists of a wide variety of materials related to map production, generated and collected by George F. Jenks, a professor of geography at the University of Kansas from 1949-1986. The collection also includes publications written by Jenks and other research and teaching materials from his career.

Biography of George Frederick Jenks
George F. Jenks was born in Oneonta, New York on July 9, 1916. He graduated from Strong Vincent High School in Erie, Pennsylvania about 1934. Jenks completed his Bachelor's Degree in Education at the State Teacher's College in Albany, New York in 1941. He subsequently earned Master and Doctoral Degrees in Geography from Syracuse University in 1947 and 1950 respectively.
During World War II, Jenks worked for the U.S. Army Air Force. During his graduate and doctoral programs he taught geography classes at South Kortright Central School, Syracuse University, Western Illinois University, and the University of Arkansas. He joined the faculty of the Geography Department at the University of Kansas in 1949.
Jenks focused on field methods and cartography, establishing himself as one of the nation's premier cartographers. A particular research interest was the processing and graphic display of statistical data. he often carried out his innovative map research projects and publications in collaboration with his students.
Jenks retired from the University of Kansas in 1986. He passed away in December 1996 at the age of 80.

Scope and Contents
Jenks' map collection includes draft materials related to producing scholarly papers and presentations, atlases, maps, government publications, and other materials related to Jenks' cartographic research and work. It includes typescripts, proofs, reproductions of artwork, charts, figures, photographic positives and negatives, and other related materials.
Topics in the collection include but are not limited to statistical mapping, human and other populations mapping in Kansas and elsewhere in the United States and the world, three dimensional (3-D) mapping, agriculture and farming, map production, the use of computers in map production, etc. Some projects were completed on behalf of the Kansas government; some were completed with professional organizations and other associations with which Jenks was associated.
The collection is chronologically arranged by entries found on Jenks' curriculum vitae and physically organized by size of material; materials related to specific projects may therefore be found in multiple locations. A "Related Materials" note associated with individual folders indicate for which publication these draft materials were made. Jenks' curriculum vitae is included in the collection, making it possible to trace the development of his research activities chronologically.
