History of the Menninger Bible Study Course

Flora (Flo) Vesta Knisely Menninger, wife of Charles Frederick (C.F.) Menninger and mother of psychiatrists Karl and William Claire Menninger, began organizing a Bible study class for any woman in Topeka, Kansas in 1898. She expressly began the class because the class she had been attending became exclusive to unmarried women.

Menninger developed an extensive outline for a four-year course. This became the basis of both in-person classes she taught through the Topeka Young Women's Christian Association (Y.W.C.A.), as well as long-distance courses for women elsewhere wishing to study from the outline. Eventually the four-year course was taught nationwide through the Y.W.C.A. Flo Menninger died in 1945, and the course continues to be available for interested groups through the Y.W.C.A.
