History of the United Farm Workers
According to their website, United Farm Workers (UFW) is a labor union concerned with improving the wages and working conditions of agricultural laborers. It was founded in 1962 by Cesar Chavez and Dolores Huerta as the National Farm Workers' Assocation (NFWA) and has historically had majority Latinx membership. Chavez and Heurta organized the five-year Delano grape strike beginning in 1965.
In 1966, NFWA merged with the AFL-CIO-affiliated mostly-Filipino union, Agriculatural Workers' Organizing Committee (AWOC). It was renamed UFW in 1971. In 2006, UFW disaffiliated with ALF-CIO and joined the labor federation Change to Win.
