Biography of Ruben Menendez

Ruben Menendez, born in Cuba around 1912, moved to Winfield, Cowley County, Kansas by 1940 with his brother Raul. Ruben began publishing his poetry and editing a column in the Winfield Daily Courier titled "Among Kansas Poets," which featured poems from local authors. Menendez was a part of the Kansas Authors Club and also, according to census records, directed recreation at the Winfield State Hospital.

Prior to moving to Winfield, Menendez and his brother moved through the United States from Florida to Tennessee, where Menendez completed some college work (possibly at Wesleyan College in Athens, Tennessee). Menendez had his work featured in several daily and periodical newspapers and journals in the United States, including the Chattanooga, Tennessee Times and the Social Science magazine. In 1934 he received honorary mention in the Chattanooga Writers Club for his poem "The Spring is a Gypsy."
