History of the 1908 Flood

According to newspaper accounts of the time, the 1908 flood almost equaled the 1903 flood after the heavy rains in the Missouri and Kaw River Valleys. Because of the force of the water around the Missouri Pacific Bridge, flood waters backed up in all the sewers and drainage areas on both sides of the state line. Armourdale, Argentine, and the West Bottoms lowlands were all inundated, with water reaching depths of 2-10 feet.

No lives were lost in the 1908 flood, but real property damage was extensive.

Scope and Contents

The real photographic postcards are contained in a booklet and open accordion-style. The prints are double-sided. Views include several of Armourdale (residential streets, by the Union Pacific elevator, and south 19th and 7th Streets); Riverview railyards and the Cypress yards; 16th and Genessee Streets in Kansas City, MO; from the 7th Street Viaduct (including a view of a residential area and of an elevator in Armourdale), and 16th Street looking toward the Stock Exchange.

The postcards were sent to Sadie L. Parsons of Lincoln, Nebraska by an unknown correspondent.
